Our preschool classroom was filled with curiosity and excitement recently as our preschoolers and their 5th grade buddies experienced a hands-on lesson in a traditional skill rarely seen today.
Katie Faul, a substitute teacher and parent from our school community, generously volunteered her time to visit the classroom with her spinning wheel and prepared wool. The visit was inspired by the preschoolers' recent interest in sheep and the shearing and cleaning of their wool from their study of the letter W. When Miss Katie learned how fascinated the students were with wool, she shared a book and wool and offered to bring in her spinning wheel for a live demonstration.
During the presentation, Katie explained how sheep's wool is transformed into yarn. Students watched closely as she operated the spinning wheel, demonstrating how the fibers twist together to create strong, usable thread. She gave the students a true appreciation for the craftsmanship involved.
The experience became even more special when Miss Katie invited the children to participate by taking a turn pressing the foot pedals to make the wheel spin. Preschoolers chose different colors of wool to blend into the yard, resulting in a colorful creation.
For many students, this was their first time seeing a spinning wheel in action. The opportunity to see a hands-on demonstration, especially from someone the students know and admire, made the learning experience meaningful and memorable.
We are incredibly grateful to Miss Katie for going above and beyond to enrich our students' learning. Her willingness to share her talents and interests helped bring our lessons to life in a truly unique way.
