Sophomore Intro to Programming students have been learning all about representing data using only the 2 available electrical states--on or off (known as the binary system). They converted text to binary using the ASCII system and created images by turning pixels on or off. Today, they learned all about the binary number system (0s and 1s)--the basis for it, how it works, and how to convert between the decimal (base-10) system and the binary (base-2) system. The Flippy Do is a great manipulative to help in converting between these two number systems. In case anyone is wondering, the "10 Types" in the last image actually converts to "2 Types" in binary.
